Storage Methods And Precautions For TPU Fabrics
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) fabrics are widely used in clothing, bags, and outdoor products due to their excellent abrasion resistance, water resistance, breathability, and environmental friendliness. However, improper storage can lead to degradation of TPU fabric's performance or appearance due to environmental factors. Therefore, proper storage is crucial to maintaining its quality.
1. Storage Environment Requirements
Temperature Control
TPU fabrics are temperature-sensitive. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures (e.g., above 40°C) can cause the material to soften, deform, or even melt, while low temperatures (e.g., below -20°C) can make it brittle and affect its flexibility. Ideally, storage temperatures should be maintained between 10°C and 30°C, avoiding extreme temperature fluctuations.
Humidity Management
High humidity environments can easily cause TPU fabrics to absorb moisture, which can affect their physical properties, such as reducing abrasion resistance and causing mold. The recommended relative humidity for storage is between 40% and 60%. If the humidity is high, use a desiccant or dehumidifier.
Ventilation Conditions
Although TPU fabric has a certain degree of chemical resistance, prolonged exposure to airtight, unventilated environments may accelerate material degradation. Store in a well-ventilated location and avoid hot, stuffy conditions or poor air circulation.
II. Storage Methods
Avoid direct sunlight
TPU fabric may yellow or degrade under prolonged UV exposure. Therefore, it should be stored in a dark environment, such as in opaque packaging or in a cool, dark place. For display purposes, UV-protective packaging is recommended.
Avoid compression and folding
Although TPU fabric has a certain degree of elasticity, prolonged heavy pressure or improper folding may cause creases, cracks, or permanent deformation. When storing, try to keep the fabric flat or on a roll to avoid contact with sharp objects.
Individual Packaging
To prevent chemical reactions with other materials (such as plastics and rubber) or the absorption of odors, it is recommended that TPU fabric be stored separately in the original manufacturer's packaging or in a well-sealed polyethylene (PE) bag. If stacking is necessary, place non-woven fabric or soft interlayers between layers to reduce friction damage.
III. Special Precautions
Keep away from chemicals
TPU fabrics may be affected by strong acids, strong bases, and organic solvents (such as gasoline and alcohol), causing surface dissolution or performance degradation. Avoid contact with such chemicals in the storage area, and ensure that the packaging is properly sealed.
Regular Inspection
TPU fabrics stored for long periods should be inspected regularly for discoloration, stickiness, mold, or physical damage. If any problems are found, adjust storage conditions or take remedial measures immediately.
Avoid prolonged storage
Although TPU fabrics are highly stable, if they have not been used for an extended period (e.g., over a year), it is recommended to ventilate or gently stretch them periodically (e.g., quarterly) to maintain their flexibility.
IV. Summary
The key to storing TPU fabrics is to control temperature and humidity, avoid exposure to light and chemical attack, and maintain ventilation and a flat surface. Following these steps can effectively extend their lifespan and ensure their performance is not affected. Whether it is industrial inventory or personal collection, reasonable storage management is an important part of maintaining the quality of TPU fabrics.
